HCL Sametime is chat, presence and online meetings for companies. It ties in with HCL Notes and uses Domino for users and access. Sametime can be seen as HCL's answer to Microsoft Teams, but with data in your own data centre.
What can HCL Sametime do?
- Chat one to one and in groups, with files, images and history.
- Presence, so that in Notes, Verse and on mobile you can see whether a colleague is online, busy or away.
- Meetings with video, screen sharing, recording and meeting rooms that external guests can join from a browser.
- Integration in the Notes client, so you can start a chat directly from a mail or a document.
Why choose Sametime over Teams?
It is rarely a question of features. Teams wins on breadth. Sametime wins when the company requires chat and meetings to stay on its own servers, for example in the public sector, defence or industries with strict data rules. Sametime runs on your own server or in Kubernetes and sends no data outside the organisation.
Sametime today
HCL has rebuilt Sametime from the ground up. Versions 11 and 12 use MongoDB for chat history and can run in Docker. The old Sametime based on Domino alone is out of support, so older installations should be upgraded or retired.
Common questions about Sametime
Is Sametime included in the Domino licence?
Sametime Premium, which includes meetings, is a separate licence. Basic chat and presence are included in most Domino agreements. Check your agreement or ask us.
Can Sametime integrate with Teams?
There is no direct integration. Most choose one or the other. If you run both, decide which one is your primary tool.
Does Sametime work on mobile?
Yes. There are apps for iOS and Android with chat and presence.
