A Notes consultant is a specialist in HCL Notes and Domino who helps companies run, develop, integrate and migrate their Notes platform.
A Notes consultant is a specialist in HCL Notes and HCL Domino. The consultant helps companies run, develop, integrate and migrate their Notes platform. The term covers both developers and administrators, and in practice an experienced Notes consultant does both.
What does a Notes consultant do?
The work typically falls into four groups:
- Notes development: new applications, changes to old ones, integrations with other systems and AI.
- Notes administration: running Domino servers, upgrades, user management, security and monitoring.
- Notes migration: analysing and moving mail and applications to Microsoft 365 or other platforms.
- Advice: licences, platform strategy, documentation and handover when internal staff leave.
Why do you need an external Notes consultant?
Notes is 35 years old, and most people who knew the platform have retired or moved on. At the same time many companies still run business critical applications in Notes. When the last internal Notes employee leaves, the company is left with systems nobody dares to touch. An external Notes consultant gives access to experience without hiring a full time employee for a platform that may be phased out in a few years.
What should you look for?
- Experience over certificates. The problems in old Notes environments are not in any manual.
- Both development and operations. The two are linked, and a consultant who only does one often misses the cause of a problem.
- Knowledge of Microsoft 365. Most tasks today involve coexistence or migration.
- References from companies like yours. See our references and cases.
- Documentation. A good consultant leaves an environment that others can take over.
Common questions
What does a Notes consultant cost?
Hourly rate or fixed price per task. We offer a free half consulting day, so you can try us before you decide.
Can a Notes consultant work remotely?
Yes. Most operations and development happens over secure remote access. We gladly visit for analysis and workshops, in Denmark and across Europe.
What is the difference between a Notes consultant and a Domino administrator?
A Domino administrator handles server operations. A Notes consultant covers more ground and can also develop and migrate. With us it is the same person.
