XPages is a way to build web applications on HCL Domino. Data lives in Notes databases, but users work in the browser. XPages arrived in Notes 8.5 in 2009 and is built on Java Server Faces.
How does XPages work?
An XPage is a page designed in Domino Designer by dragging and dropping fields, tables and buttons. The logic is written in JavaScript that runs on the server, or in Java. The page reads and writes data in the same NSF database the classic Notes client uses. That means the same application can have a Notes interface for the office and an XPages interface for web and mobile.
What is XPages used for?
- Web portals for customers and partners on top of existing Notes data.
- Mobile friendly versions of internal applications.
- Dashboards that gather data from several Notes databases.
- Self service, where external users do not need a Notes client.
Is XPages still a good choice?
XPages is still maintained by HCL, but few new features arrive. For new projects we usually recommend Domino REST API with a modern frontend in React or Vue, or Domino Leap for simple forms. If you already have XPages applications that work, there is rarely a reason to rewrite them. We are happy to maintain and extend them.
Common questions about XPages
Does XPages require Java skills?
JavaScript covers most needs. Advanced things, such as integration with external systems, are easiest in Java.
Does XPages work in Nomad?
No. Nomad runs the classic Notes interface. XPages requires a browser against the Domino server's HTTP port.
Can XPages be migrated to Microsoft 365?
Not directly. Data can move to SharePoint or Dataverse, but the interface must be rebuilt. We help assess what is worth it.
