Domino Leap is a low code tool for HCL Domino. You build simple web applications in the browser without programming. It used to be called HCL Volt and Domino Volt, and the Leap name arrived in 2023.

What can you build in Domino Leap?

Leap is made for forms and workflows. Typical examples are:

  • Requests for leave, equipment or access with approval from a manager.
  • Registration of incidents, deviations or customer enquiries.
  • Surveys and sign ups, also for external users.
  • Simple case flows with status, owner and deadlines.

The application is designed by drag and drop. Rules, calculations and emails are set up in a wizard. Data is stored in an ordinary NSF database, so it can be seen in the Notes client and used by LotusScript and Domino REST API.

Leap compared with Power Apps

Leap is HCL's answer to Microsoft Power Apps. The difference is that Leap runs on your own Domino server, and data never leaves the organisation. Power Apps, on the other hand, is bigger and integrates more tightly with Microsoft 365. If you have both platforms, the choice should depend on where the data should live.

Who uses Leap?

Leap suits companies with many small Notes applications that need modernising, but where a full development project is too expensive. A power user in the business can build and maintain the application, while the IT department manages access and operations.

Common questions about Domino Leap

Does Leap require an extra licence?

Yes. Leap is an add on to the Domino licence, but the price is modest compared with development.

Can old Notes applications be converted to Leap?

Not automatically. But Leap can often replace them, because most old applications are forms with a workflow.

Can Leap be used on mobile?

Yes. Leap applications are responsive and work in the browser on phone and tablet.
